Calculate the landed cost of an imported product
Purchase, packing, tooling, freight allocated by volume, customs duty on the customs value, inspection, safety margin: the same calculation as in GeniusTrade. Change a figure, everything recalculates.
What goes into a landed cost
The landed cost is what a piece costs once it has arrived at your site or your client's, all costs included. Three blocks, in the order of the file.
The purchase cost
Unit price, packing, tooling amortised over the run, supplier transport to the port of departure. In the supplier's currency, converted at the quote's rate, not the day's rate.
Transport and customs
Main freight, sea or air, allocated by carton volume; on-carriage through to delivery; customs duty calculated on the customs value, that is the purchase plus the sea freight.
Fees and the safety margin
Factory inspection or quality control, side costs (customs broker, insurance, certification), and a percentage safety margin for the file's contingencies.
The mistakes that cost a margin
- Dividing freight by the number of pieces without going through volume: two products from the same container don't carry the same transport cost.
- Calculating customs duty on the purchase price alone: the customs value includes the sea freight.
- Using the day's exchange rate instead of the quote's rate: the margin shown changes every morning, and no one knows any more which one backed the quotation.
- Forgetting to amortise tooling and fixed costs over the run: the small quantity looks profitable, it isn't.
- Comparing an FOB quote and an EXW quote at equal price: one includes supplier transport, the other doesn't.
What GeniusTrade does beyond a calculator
- Scenarios side by side: one supplier, one route, one inspection per scenario, and each one's margin in the same table.
- Forwarder rate cards by route, compared automatically, with fill optimisation by container or by pallet.
- Exchange rates frozen per scenario, at the quote date.
- Validation before ordering: the margin is checked before commitment, not after.
- Tracking against actual: freight, customs and inspection invoices reconciled against the plan, file by file.
